Amnesty International very much regrets that Montasser Rajab Abu-Zaid was
executed by hanging at dawn on 14 June 1997 at Swaqa Prison. His confession,
which was allegedly made under torture, formed the basis for his conviction.
He is one of three prisoners to have been executed within the last few days.
Participants in this action may send letters to the authorities listed in the
previous follow-up (MDE 16/02/97):
- expressing regret at the execution of Montasser Rajab Abu-Zaid;
- continuing to urge an immediate end to executions in Jordan and appealing
to the Jordanian government to work towards the total abolition of the death
penalty by the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
