Israel and the Occupied Territories: Zakariya ‘Afif Zakarneh – administrative detention

The above-named, who comes from the Jenin area in the West Bank, was arrested on 1 July 1991 and issued with a five-month detention order. He is currently held in the Ketziot detention centre. He appealed against his order and at a hearing held on 28 August 1991, the non-classified evidence revelealed to him and to his lawyer alleged that he was a senior activist in the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (a faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organization). His detention order was reduced by 16 days and he is now due for release on 14 November 1991. Amnesty International is concerned that he may not have been given an adequate opportunity to challenge his order.
