Ahn Jae-ku, a former professor of mathematics, and his son, a mathematics student, were arrested in June 1994 under the National Security Law. Anh Jae-ku received a life sentence in November 1994; his son was sentenced to 14 months. This paper describes the arrest, interrogation and imprisonment of the two men and explains why AI considers them to be prisoners of conscience, who should be released immediately and unconditionally. Their cases are typical of a pattern in this national security legislation is used to imprison people for the non-violent exercise of their rights to freedom of expression and association.
