Mexico: Fear of torture/ill-treatment: Benigno Guzman Martinez

Benigno Guzman Martinez, a peasant activist in the state of Guerrero, was detained by members of the Federal District Attorney General’s Office on 27 January 1997, accused of being a senior leader of the Revolutionary Popular Army (EPR), an armed opposition group. The Interior Ministry have stated that his detention was made possible by testimonies of alleged members of the EPR who are in detention, and who were reportedly tortured by the security forces. There is concern that he also may face torture or ill-treatment in detention.
