Zaire: Ill-treatment / fear of torture / medical concern

Gabriel Kyamusoke, civil servant, trade unionist; Blaise Banzwa Kabo, civil servant, trade unionist: On 27 January 1997 the above men, leaders of the trade union Solidarite, were severely beaten when eight men in plain clothes, believed to be members of the security forces, arrested Gabriel Kyamusoke in his office in Kinshasa. Gabriel Kamusoke then allegedly suffered further ill-treatment and beatings at the Civil Guard’s premises in Ngaliema district. Both men are now believed to be detained at the Civil Guard’s Headquarters in Gombe district. The reasons for their arrest and continuing detention are not known, but there are fears they may be subject to further beatings.
