Malaysia: The arrest of Anwar Ibrahim and his political associates – An external briefing

On 20 September 1998, Anwar Ibrahim was arrested after leading demonstrators through the streets of Kuala Lumpur and asking, among other things, for the Prime Minister’s resignation. Sixteen of his political associates were also subsequently arrested. By 3 October eight detainees had been released. This briefing gives some background information on the case of Anwar Ibrahim and his associates and calls for their immediate and unconditional release.
