Europe: Turning rhetoric into reality: New monitoring mechanism at European borders should ensure fundamental rights and accountability

A joint-statement by eight organisations including Amnesty International, regarding the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism proposed by the European Commission as part of the Pact on Migration and Asylum. The proposed mechanism has the potential to address rights violations at borders but only if it is expanded in (i) scope; (ii) independence is ensured; (iii) accountability for violations is strengthened; (iv) and suitable consequences follow governments’ non-compliance. Failing this, the mechanism risks being a fig leaf behind which violations continue.
