2007 Elections to the United Nations Human Rights Council: Background information on candidate countries

On 17 May 2007, UN Member States will elect 14 members of the UN Human Rights Council. Amnesty International is providing in this document a brief review of the current human rights situation and an overview of the candidates’ record of ratification and cooperation with the treaty bodies and Special Procedures. Amnesty International is concerned that in three of the five regions the number of declared candidates matches the number of vacant seats. However, a Member State has an option to not to express support for candidates that do not fully meet the standards for membership of the Council.
