Romania: Romanian authorities respond to Amnesty International’s May 1995 report

In October 1995 the Romanian authorities released three reports in response to AI’s document “Romania: Broken commitments to human rights” (EUR 39/01/95) which contained details of continued human rights violations in Romania. AI welcomes the response as evidence of continued cooperation with the Romanian government but is concerned that one of the reports, from the Ministry of Interior, confirms that investigations into allegations of police abuse have not been thorough or impartial. The reports from the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Justice, however, show that new investigations have been initiated in cases of alleged torture or ill-treatment by police officers. This report presents a case by case summary of new information received as well as comments about AI’s outstanding concerns.
