Cambodia: Bracing for development

On 6 February 2007 the municipality of Phnom Penh entered into a 99-year lease contract with a company whose development plan risks displacing between 3,000 and 4,200 families. Some authorities have assured NGOs and communities that there will be no eviction, while others have escorted villagers to a newly built housing complex. This document urges the government of Cambodia to protect all Cambodians against forced evictions; to review the contract with the developer and to guarantee that all those affected by necessary eviction are ensured an effective remedy.
