El Salvador: Killing of trade unionist Nazario de Jesus Gracia

The body of Nazario de Jesus Gracia, 34-year-old nightwatchman of the FEASIES trade union federation, was found on the morning of 2 March 1992 at the FEASIES offices in San Salvador. His throat had been slit and preliminary forensic investigations suggest that wounds on the body were inflicted with a machete. AI is concerned that this may have been a political killing, carried out by a “death squad”. Nazirio de Jesus Gracia was a regional representative of ASTIRA workers’ association and had been involved in a lawsuit between ASTIRA and the Ministry of Agriculture over compensation to dismissed workers prior to his death. He had also given testimony to the Human Rights Commission (CDHES) in October 1991, alleging threats to himself and his family by the National Police.
