India: Review of the Accreditation Status of National Human Rights Commission of India

Seven non-governmental organisations wrote an open letter to the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) ahead of the review of the accreditation status of the National Human Rights Commission of India (NHRCI) by GANHRI’s Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) this month. We raised our deep concerns regarding the commission’s lack of independence, pluralism, diversity, and accountability that are contrary to United Nations Principles relating to the Status of National Institutions (The Paris Principles). The commission has repeatedly failed to deliver its mandate, in particular to protect the rights of people from marginalized communities, religious minorities, and human rights defenders.
