USA: Capital injustices: more damage to Rule of Law principles, more shambles at Guantánamo, more executions

For a moment, it looked like a suspect arrested in New York after a recent attack there might be transferred to Guantánamo after President Trump said he was considering it. The President’s calls for the death penalty flouted the presumption of innocence, and came shortly before the USA’s 23rd execution of the year, one which violated international law. Meanwhile at ‘Camp Justice’ in Guantánamo, a military commission judge was passing a sentence – not against a detainee, but against the Chief Defense Counsel.
