USA: Lost in the labyrinth: detention of asylum-seekers

This document looks at the treatment of asylum-seekers in the USA. It examines the recent history of immigration and refugee legislation that leads to detention and the violation of the asylum-seekers’ fundamental human rights. Presenting case studies where appropriate, the report looks at the problems caused by lack of information for those detained, the conditions of detention and the particular problems faced by women detainees. It concludes with a demonstration of how the USA is failing to meet international standards by continuing to treat asylum-seekers as criminals.
