Guyana: Insufficient action on long-standing human rights concerns: Amnesty International submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, January 2015

In this submission Amnesty International expresses concern that violence against women and girls remains widespread within Guyana and that serious implementation gaps remain in the legislative steps taken to address this problem. Discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons is prevalent in Guyana, and sex between men are criminalised. Allegations of excessive use of force by the police are of serious concern to Amnesty International, as is the pattern of impunity which persists in relation to these abuses. Finally, Amnesty International is concerned at the retention of the death penalty.
