AI welcomes the releases during 1992 of most political prisoners, including several prisoners of conscience, held in Ghana and also the repeal in September 1992 of legislation providing for indefinite administrative detention. However, AI is concerned about the detentions in late 1992, during the violence which followed the elections. Relatives of political exile Alhaji Damba were arrested on 15 November, suspected of involvement in a bombing. Opposition leader Johnny Hansen was detained on 25 November, apparently for having being in contact with Alhaji Damba. Journalist Kwesi Pratt and Professor Adu Boahen were questioned for the same reason. Prisoner of conscience George Naykene remains detained. AI is also concerned about new laws allowing detention without trial for 14 days.
