Chad: In the name of security? Arrests, detentions and restrictions on freedom of expression in Chad
Freedom of expression has been severely restricted in Chad for many years. Successive governments have used arbitrary arrests and detention without charge or trial to silence government critics. Scores of people have been arrested solely for expressing their opinion, while others have been victims of arbitrary arrests and unlawful detention, often in connection with alleged coup attempts. Recent research reveals that the situation is unchanged – and in fact is worsening. This report highlights long-standing and widespread use of arbitrary arrests and unlawful detention by the authorities to silence dissenting voices.
