Syria: Long-term detention and torture of political prisoners

This report summarizes AI’s concerns in Syria, based on information received up to late May 1992. While welcoming the release of thousands of political prisoners following the amnesties of late 1991 and early 1992, AI remains concerned about thousands of people believed still to be held under state of emergency legislation in force since 1962, mostly without charge or trial. Some have been in prison for many years, one since 1969. They include human rights workers, former government officials, engineers and doctors; most were arrested in connection with prohibited political groups. Information is given on recent arrests and long-term prisoners. AI is concerned also about reported torture and deaths in detention and about prisoners held after their sentenced have expired.
