Further information on UA 80/92 (MDE 13/07/92, 6 March 1992) - Fear of Torture
IRAN: Sardar Yousef Naroui
Amir Naroui
Amnesty International has learned that Amir Naroui, arrested on 15 February
1992 in Tabriz, was released at the beginning of April. It is unclear whether
any reason was given for his arrest. Sardar Yousef Naroui, arrested on the
same date, remains in detention, and has reportedly been transferred from Tabriz
to Zahedan Prison. It is unknown whether he has been charged, and the reason
for his detention remain unclear.
Amnesty International believes that Sardar Yousef Naroui may be detained for
political reasons, following recent reports of arbitrary arrest, detention,
ill-treatment and execution of people from the Naroui tribe in the
Baluchistan-Sistan region in south-eastern Iran.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes and airmail letters
- welcoming the release of Amir Naroui, but expressing concern at the continued
incommunicado detention of Sardar Yousef Naroui;
- seeking information about the exact reasons for the arrest of Sardar Yousef
Naroui and urging that he be released immediately and unconditionally if he
is being held solely for the non-violent expression of his conscientiously
held beliefs, or because of his ethnic origin;
- seeking assurances that he is being humanely treated;
- urging that he be given immediate access to a lawyer of his own choice, his
family members and a medical doctor if necessary.
