Amnesty International urges the Organization of African Unity Assembly of Heads of State and Government to promote human rights

, N° d'index: IOR 63/002/1993

Amnesty International, in a letter sent by its Secretary General, Pierre Sane, has appealed to all the members of the Organization of African Unity to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of the OAU on 25 May 1963 by addressing human rights issues at its next session of the OAU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in June 1993 in Cairo. It is hoped that particular emphasis is placed on the pressing problem of extrajudicial executions. It is also hoped that the Assembly will strengthen its annual resolution on the work of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights this year, to include urging the two remaining member states (Ethipia and Swaziland) who have not ratified the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, to do so.
