TURKRAN 12/92 - Turkey: Kurdish writer Musa Anter, 74, murdered

, N° d'index: EUR 44/093/1992

Musa Anter, a prominent Kurdish writer, journalist and founder-member of the People's Labour Party, was killed at around 8.30pm on 20 September 1992. A Kurdish-speaking man had requested him to help settle a land dispute; he drove Musa Anter and a relative, Orhan Miroglu, to the outskirts of Diyarbakir, where he reportedly shot them with an automatic pistol. Musa Anter died on the way to hospital; Orhan Miroglu was seriously injured. Journalists who tried to investigate shortly afterwards were detained for some hours by men who said they were policemen. Musa Anter is the ninth journalist to be killed since February this year. He was one of 28 people, mostly Kurdish, threatened with death in a leaflet circulated in southeast Turkey earlier this year.
