AI has been informed that two of the above-named, 45-year-old Fatma Gulten Sesen, owner of Mucadele newspaper (female) and 50-year-old Sultan Celik (female) have been tortured. The information came from people detained at the same time for another reason. The alleged torture during interrogation is said to have included hanging by the wrists and electric shocks. Signs of ill-treatment were confirmed by lawyers who were allowed to see the detainees. The detention period of all the above-named has been extented to 15 days by decision of the prosecutor. AI fears that they are at risk of further torture while being interrogated in Adana Police Station.

Amnesty International has being informed that two of the above detainees,
45-year-old Fatma Gülten _e_en and 50-year-old Sultan Çelik, have been subjected
to torture, including hanging by the wrist and electric shocks, while they
were being interrogated. This information came from people who were detained
at the same time at Adana Police Station for another reason and who have since
been released. The traces of ill-treatment have been confirmed by lawyers
who have been allowed to visit the detainees. By decision of the prosecutor,
the detention period of all detainees has been extended to 15 days. It is feared
that all the detainees may be at risk of further torture while interrogated
at Adana Police Station.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and
airmail letters
- expressing concern at the reported torture of Fatma Gülten _e_en and Sultan
Çelik at Adana Police Station;
- urging that the reported torture is investigated and that those responsible
are brought to justice;
- urging that they are given all medical attention they may require;
- appealing that all the detainees named above are not subjected to any further
ill-treatment in custody;
- asking to be informed about any charges which have been brought against the
detainees.
