New Zealand: Demanding real protection: Strong human rights framework needed to address failures to protect : Amnesty International submission to the Un Universal Periodic Review, January – February 2014

, N° d'index: ASA 32/001/2013

In this submission, Amnesty International assesses the implementation of recommendations previously accepted by New Zealand, including in relation to violence against women, child abuse and non-discrimination of Māori and Pacific populations. Amnesty International notes New Zealand’s failure to ratify several UN human rights treaties. The organization is also concerned that new legislation is passed without allowing adequate time for consultation. The submission also raises concerns about the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, the lack of domestic legal protections for economic, social and cultural rights, and child poverty.
