Republic of Korea (South Korea): Another injustice under the National Security Law: the case of Professor Park Chang-hee

, N° d'index: ASA 25/021/1997

Amnesty International is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Professor Park Chang-hee, a 63-year-old professor of history and prisoner of conscience. He was arrested on 26 April 1995 by officers from the Agency for National Security Planning (ANSP) and interrogated for 20 days. There is concern at allegations that while in ANSP custody he was tortured and ill-treated and that confessions obtained under duress were used as evidence against him. He was sentenced on 21 October 1995 to seven years' imprisonment, later reduced to three and a half years' imprisonment under the National Security Law, for divulging "state secrets" to North Korea.
