The Jammu and Kashmir governor has instituted a judicial inquiry into the killings in Sopore. The inquiry will be held by a sitting judge. One inspector and two sub-inspectors of the Border Security Force (BSF) were suspended immediately after the incident; five other BSF personnel have also been suspended.

INDIA:At least 53 people in Sopore, Kashmir
The Jammu and Kashmir governor, Mr Girish Saxena has instituted a judicial
inquiry into the killings which took place in Sopore. The inquiry, announced
in reports of 9 January 1993, is to be held by a sitting judge. One inspector
and two sub-inspectors of the Border Security Force (BSF) were suspended
immediately after the incident and according to the government. A high-level
BSF inquiry found prima facie evidence against five more BSF personnel who
have also been suspended.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and
airmail letters in English or your own language:
- Welcoming reports that the government has ordered a judicial inquiry into
the incident and urging that the findings of the investigation are immediately
made public.
