People's Republic of China: Continued patterns of human rights violations in China

, N° d'index: ASA 17/032/1992

Three years after the suppression of peaceful pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square, AI remains concerned by human rights abuses which appear to continue unabated in China. This paper includes reports of arbitrary arrests and imprisonment, under both criminal and administrative regulations; violations in ethnic minority regions, namely Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia; unfair trials; torture and ill-treatment of prisoners; the dramatic increase in the number of executions; and summary trial procedures in death penalty cases. The victims of these abuses include students, teachers, Buddhist monks and nuns, Catholic priests, Protestants and Muslims; many have been imprisoned for apparently peaceful demands for democracy or political autonomy.
