, N° d'index: ASA 17/028/1995

This document decribes AI's concerns about major human rights violations six years after the supression of the 1989 pro-democracy protests. It reports increased political repression and the adoption of new repressive legislation in the past year. Hundreds of arbitrary arrest have been carried out and administrative detention was used increasingly against dissidents. Unfair trials continued to be the norm. Torture and ill-treatment of political prisoners was widely reported and the death penalty continued to be used extensively. Repression of religious groups was reported and repression of dissent in the Tibet Autonomous Region increased. The appendix consists of a translation of the verdict passed in the case of Hu Shigen and 14 other defendants on 16 December 1994 in Beijing.
