CHIRAN 03/92: The People's Republic of China: the 1989 pro-democracy movement: restrictions against released prisoners

This document describes some of the measures taken by the authorities in China to restrict the freedom of movement and other rights of released prisoners of conscience, detained after the 1989 pro-democracy demonstrations. Six cases are listed, illustrating restrictions placed on such persons after their release. The cases mentioned are: Wang Ruowang, 74-year-old writer and journalist; Chen Xiaoping, 30-year-old lecturer in constitutional law; Gao Xin, 36-year-old former editor of a university newspaper in Beijing; Zhang Weiguo, 36-year-old Beijing journalist; Yu Haocheng, 67-year-old Director of the China Legal System and Social Development Research Institute; and Yang Tao, a history student. Cases of retention of prisoners after completion of sentence are also noted.
