China: Medical concern: Gao Yu
Gao Yu is the former deputy editor-in-chief of the now-defunct newspaper Economics Weekly, which was banned during the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protests. She was arrested in October 1993 on charges of "leaking state secrets" and was sentenced in November 1994, after an apparently unfair trial, to six years' imprisonment. AI considers her to be a prisoner of conscience who should be released immediately and unconditionally. AI is also concerned about her health in detention: she suffers from angina and from Meniere's disease.
