China: No one is safe: Political repression and abuse of power in the 1990s - includes correction
No one is safe in China. Despite economic reforms, political repression and abuse of power mean that everyone is at risk of serious human rights violations. Torture is endemic. Thousands of political dissidents and members of religious and ethnic groups remain in jail. Many people are arbitrarily detained and sent to labour camps. More people are executed in China each year than in all other countries combined. Amnesty International calls on the Chinese authorities and the international community to take urgent steps to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of 1.2 billion people.
