Myanmar: Scores of activists detained

, N° d'index: ASA 16/017/1996

There is grave concern at the arrests of some 191 National League for Democracy activists (NLD) by the authorities. The current wave of arrests began on 20 May and is still continuing throughout the country. Amnesty International has obtained the names of 91 of those arrested. They are being held incommunicado and without charge at unknown locations and there is concern for their safety. The arrests are believed to be a pre-emptive attempt by the State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) to prevent a planned meeting of elected representatives of the NLD to mark the sixth anniversary of its victory in the 1990 elections. Amnesty International believes the activists are prisoners of conscience and is calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
