Myanmar: 1998 Crackdown on Students: Imprisoned for Promoting Student Union
Aung Kyaw Hein, Nay Lin Soe, Nay Oo, and Set Aung Naing have been imprisoned since 1998, and are serving prison sentences for circulating information about an outlawed student union. They were reportedly tortured at the time of arrest, and are suffering from health problems that may have been exacerbated by their treatment in detention. Amnesty International is concerned that the authorities have transferred these prisoners in a punitive manner to locations far from their families, and that this has a detrimental effect on both the mental and physical health of these prisoners. Amnesty International is also concerned by the effect that transfer to distant prisons has on the families of political prisoners.
