USA: Guinevere Garcia: a case of state assisted suicide

, N° d'index: AMR 51/146/1995

Guinevere Garcia, 35, is scheduled to be executed in Illinois on 17 January 1996. She was sentenced to death for the murder of her husband who had brutally abused her. She chose to drop her appeals and has requested that she be exceuted. The execution of women in the USA is rare with over 98% of those sentenced since 1973 gaining commutation of their sentence. Guinevere Garcia has had a tragic life marked by consistent abuse and problems of mental illness. AI opposes the death penalty in all cases and believes that the execution of a prisoner who has chosen to abandon their appeals and allow the state to execute them is no less a gross human rights violation than any other execution.
