Penalty
USA (Georgia):Christopher BURGER, white
Amnesty International has learned with deep regret that Christopher Burger
was executed in Georgia as scheduled on 7 December 1993.
Christopher Burger was sentenced to death for the murder of Roger Honeycutt,
white. He was seventeen years old at the time of the crime. Christopher Burger
was the ninth juvenile offender to be executed in the USA since the death penalty
was reinstated in the late 1970's, and the first in Georgia under its present
death penalty law.
Thank you to all those who sent appeals on Christopher Burger's behalf.
Participants may wish to continue action as recommended below.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/faxes/express and airmail
letters in English if possible:
- regretting the execution of Christopher Burger, which as the first execution
of a juvenile offender in the state under its present death penalty law, is
a retrograde step;
- noting that the execution of juvenile offenders is contrary to international
standards and treaties which prohibit the imposition of the death penalty on
people who were under 18 years of age at the time of the crime;
- urging that no further executions of juvenile offenders be carried out in
Georgia.
