South Andean Action 09/92: Peru: Torture of community leaders
On 27 June 1992, police detained ten members of the Comite de Defensa de los Bosques de San Ignacio, an organization which opposes the felling of trees in the San Ignacio woods. The detentions followed a confrontation between INCAFOR S. A., a wood producing enterprise and those opposed to its operations; two INCAFOR employees were killed. The detainees are being charged with the killings. They are being held in Picsi jail under charges of terrorism; it is believed that they may have been charged for no other reason than their opposition to the commercial exploitation of the woods. The testimonies of five of the detained give details of irregularities in detention, interrogation and other legal procedures.
