Peru: Women's human rights: In memory of Maria Elena Moyano

, N° d'index: AMR 46/003/1997

This report aims to recall the voice of Maria Elena Moyano, killed five years ago by members of the Communist Party of Peru (Shining Path), and her important struggle to ensure that women's rights are respected. Despite her impressive work, much still remains to be done to guarantee women their civil, political, social, economic and cultural rights. This report examines the work of the Federacion Popular de Mujeres de Villa El Salvador (FEPOMUVES), and that of the entire Peruvian women's movement, which has been crucial to the defence of women's human rights. The report also documents continuing violations of women's human rights, including the imprisonment of prisoners of conscience under new anti-terrorist legislation, and recent cases of "disappearance", extrajudicial execution, harassment and torture, including rape.
