Mexico: Human rights in jeopardy (oral statement made to non-governmental organisations in Geneva, Switzerland, 1 April 1998)

Index Number: AMR 41/019/1998

Amnesty International is increasingly concerned with the deteriorating human rights situation in Mexico. Victims of violations often have no recourse to bring the perpetrators to justice and the armed forces, whose participation in these violations is growing, enjoy a high level of impunity. “Disappearances” and torture are also on the increase. The recent massacre of 45 indiginous people highlighted the serious lack of protection for human rights that prevails in Mexico.
