MEXICOAndrés Manuel López Obrado, PRD member
Dorilian Díaz Pérez, civil servant at Town Hall
Rafael López Cruz, President of the State Committee of PRD
Darvin González Ballina, former PRD parliamentarian
and 98 other detainees, including 8 women and 3 minors
All the above-mentioned people were released without charge between 13 and
15 March 1996. Amnesty International has been informed in a fax received on
19 March from the Comité de Derechos Humanos de Tabasco CODEHUTAB, Human Rights
Committee of Tabasco, that their release was in part a result of international
solidarity and pressure:
"In order for this measure to be adopted by the federal government
many factors both political and social have to come together, but also
the outcome was influenced decisively by the letter-writing campaign done by
members of Amnesty International (nearly 200 copies of that letter were received
in our offices), and by other national and foreign organizations who work for
the defence of the human rights. We are most grateful for your generous response
to the Urgent Action."
Amnesty International will continue to follow developments into the
investigation of ill-treatment during the security force operation and the
legal and medical concerns, but no further action by the UA Network is requested.
Thank you to all of you who sent appeals.
