Mexico: Human rights violations against Ch'ol and Tzeltal Indian activists

, N° d'index: AMR 41/005/1992

This document reports AI's concern about the apparent failure to prosecute those responsible for human rights violations against at least 103 Ch'ol and Tzeltal indigenous activists and a Catholic priest in Palenque, in December 1991. The violations included arbitrary arrest, incommunicado detention and torture and the victims appear to have been chosen because of their peaceful activities on behalf of local indigenous communities. They were violently arrested on 28 December 1991, during a peaceful protest, by state judicial police and were reportedly held incommunicado without food or medical care in the state capital. They were also reportedly ill treated. Most were released on 30/31 December but 9 were held for longer, on reportedly false charges. All have now been released.
