AMR 34/36/92, 30 July 1992 - Fear of "Disappearance"/Harassment
GUATEMALA:Maritza URRUTIA RUIZ, female, teacher
and other members of her family
Amnesty International has just learned that Marizta Urrutia Ruiz has been
released.
Marizta Urrutia Ruiz was abducted by three armed unidentified men in Guatemala
City on 23 July 1992 in circumstances strongly suggesting the involvement of
the security forces. She was forced into a white car with polarized windows
and driven away. In a video cassette, delivered by unidentified men on 29 July
to a TV station and broadcast the same day,
Maritza Urrutia was shown in an apparently drugged and traumatized state.
In the video she admitted belonging to "subversive organizations" and naming
several others whom she said were also working with the armed opposition,
including her brother Edmundo Urrutia Ruiz.
Since her abduction, cars with polarized windows have reportedly been seen
around her family's home and there are fears for their safety.
