Guatemala: Human rights violations and impunity (53rd session of UN Commission on Human Rights)

, N° d'index: AMR 34/008/1997

Despite the continuation of the peace process in 1996 and a cease-fire agreement between the government and the armed opposition, human rights violations such as extrajudicial executions, torture, ill-treatment and death threats continued with impunity. Human rights defenders, critics of government policy and those working to bring to account members of the security forces involved in human rights violations, are frequently targeted for repression. Criminal suspects, street children and those from the poorest sectors of society are also the victims of violations. Amnesty International is calling on the international community to keep the human rights situation in Guatemala under review and recommends that the mandate of the Independent Expert be extended.
