Brazil: "They Treat Us Like Animals": Torture and ill-treatment in Brazil: Dehumanization and impunity within the criminal justice system
This document reports on the continuing use of torture by members of the police and prison services. It examines the historical context of torture in Brazil and the present day conditions of those in detention, including women and juveniles. It looks at the criminal justice system and the Torture Law and examines the reasons why these mechanisms have contributed to a culture of widespread impunity. The appendices contain the recommendations and comments of the UN CAT and the text of the Torture Law.
