Nigeria: Forced eviction of Abonnema Wharf waterfront: “Pack and go!”

As shown in this report, the Abonnema Wharf demolition in June 2012 constitutes a forced eviction and is therefore a violation of human rights. Amnesty International is also concerned that other communities in the waterfronts may be subjected to similar human rights violations. Amnesty International therefore urges the Rivers State government to cease all forced evictions immediately and to adopt a moratorium on all mass evictions and demolitions until all legal and procedural protections required under international human rights law and standards are in place.
