This report is about Kenyan women’s determined struggle for their rights and the government’s responsibility for continuing human rights violations. It is part of AI’s worldwide campaign for the protection of women’s human rights. It starts by outlining the political context in which abuse of women’s human rights occurs. The concerns covered include: women imprisoned and harassed for dissent (the Mothers’ hunger strike; the persecution of relatives of government opponents; persecution of women activists); torture, rape and ill-treatment, including rape of refugees; and abuses, including killings, committed in the context of the violence which erupted in late 1991, mainly in the Rift Valley and Western Provinces.
