Gambia: Deteriorating human rights situation: Amnesty International submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, October-November 2014

In this submission Amnesty International evaluates the implementation of recommendations made in the previous cycle of the UPR. The organization is concerned about the continuing use of the death penalty and the unlawful detention of human rights defenders. The rights to freedom of expression and assembly are seriously curtailed as the government keeps a tight control of the media. Other concerns expressed include interference with the independence of the judiciary, the widespread culture of impunity, reports of torture and ill-treatment in detention centres, and the clampdown on LGBTI rights.
