Morocco: Comprehensive legal reforms needed to uphold human rights

The Moroccan authorities must seize the unique opportunity afforded by current judicial reforms to launch a complete overhaul of the Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure with a view to upholding human rights, said Amnesty International. In September 2013, Morocco’s Minister of Justice and Liberties unveiled the Moroccan authorities’ plans to reform the justice system, with a view to strengthening the judiciary’s independence as well as harmonizing national laws with the Constitution and the international human rights treaties to which Morocco is a state party. In the coming months, Parliament is expected to discuss and adopt draft laws to amend the Penal Code and Code of Criminal Procedure.
