Algeria: Halt criminalization of peaceful dissent in Algeria

The Algerian authorities launched a repressive crackdown that has seen scores of people detained for peacefully exercising their rights to freedom of expression and assembly, opposition political parties and civil society groups harassed, and the independence of the judiciary undermined, in the months ahead of the June legislative elections, Amnesty International said today. As of 23 June, according to local groups and activists monitoring the human rights situation on the ground, at least 273 people are detained for exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and expression.
