United Arab Emirates: Crackdown on fundamental freedoms contradicts human rights commitments: Amnesty International Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review, July 2012

In this submission, Amnesty International assesses progress with implementing recommendations accepted during the 2008 review, concerning freedom of expression, compliance with international human rights standards and UN mechanisms, women’s citizenship rights, and the rights of migrants. Amnesty International also expresses concern about the death penalty, increased restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression and association, and about reports of incommunicado detention and torture, and threats to revoke the citizenship of individuals for peaceful political expression.
