In this report, AI highlights some human rights issues which may be relevant to the discussions of the ILO’s Committee on Application of Standards, due to be held at the 82nd International Labour Conference, Geneva, 6-23 June 1995. Under ILO Convention no. 29, on forced labour, AI is concerned about civilians forced to act as porters for the army in Myanmar. Under Conventions 87 and 98, dealing with freedom of association and collective bargaining, AI registers concern about violations committed with impunity against trade unionists in Colombia and about repression of peaceful trade union activity in Indonesia. ILO Conventions 107 and 169 deal with indigenous and tribal populations: AI is concerned about violations against indigenous peasants in Brazil and Mexico. AI also expresses concern about discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities, and against women, in Bangladesh, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Romania (ILO convention 111).
