Malaysia: Open letter on accountability for deaths in custody and fatal shootings by police officers

In this letter Amnesty International and Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) express their concern that recent plans announced by the Malaysian government do not sufficiently address the core issues of deaths in custody. The organizations highlight concerns about ongoing cases of custodial death, often the result of police torture or other ill-treatment, as well as cases of unnecessary and excessive use of force at the time of arrest. It is crucial that wide –ranging measures are taken to prevent all such deaths, as recommended in the letter.
